"Every cracked tread repaired by hand in a roadside usta's workshop holds a story. My job is to make sure those stories are not forgotten."

Erica Alexander is an automotive researcher, technical writer, and field documentarian whose work sits at the rare intersection of industrial craft and cultural preservation. Born in the Pacific Northwest and trained in mechanical engineering and science communication, she spent the early part of her career working with European automotive testing laboratories — evaluating materials, stress-testing compounds, and writing technical reports for audiences who needed precision above all else.

That precision never left her. But somewhere along the way, she became less interested in what tire manufacturers published in their data sheets and far more interested in what happened to a tire after it left the factory — in the hands of a lastikçi who had been patching split sidewalls in the same Anatolian town for forty years, using methods passed down from his father and grandfather before him.

Her first visit to Turkey in 2014 was, by her own description, accidental. A fellowship in Istanbul gave her the opportunity to document sustainable repair practices in the country's informal economy. Within weeks, she had found herself in the backstreets of Gaziantep, crouched beside a tire repair master watching him rebuild a split radial casing with a vulcanising press that predated most of her university textbooks. She cancelled her return flight.

Over the following decade, Erica would travel to fourteen provinces — from the industrial tyre corridors of Bursa and Kocaeli to the high-altitude workshops of Erzurum and the sunbaked coastal garages of Mersin and Antalya. In each region she found distinct micro-traditions: different heat application techniques, different rubber compound blending habits, different tools fashioned by hand to solve problems that no factory specification had anticipated. She interviewed more than 200 working tire craftsmen, photographed thousands of repair sequences, and filled dozens of field notebooks with measurements, material notes, and the kind of contextual knowledge that never makes it into an official technical manual.

Today Erica is based in the Tuzla district of Istanbul — chosen deliberately for its proximity to the country's largest concentration of automotive workshops and its deep-water port that has shaped Turkey's tyre import and retreading industry for generations. From her studio apartment overlooking the Sea of Marmara, she writes, edits, and publishes the research that makes up ericaalexander: a knowledge resource she describes not as a blog, but as a technical archive with a human voice.

Her motivation is urgent and practical. Many of the masters she first photographed in 2014 have since retired. Their sons have taken over, but not always their methods. Techniques refined over sixty years of working with Turkish road conditions — the potholed mountain roads of the Black Sea coast, the scorching asphalt of the Southeast in August, the salt-laden coastal routes of the Aegean — are quietly disappearing, replaced by standardised repair kits and YouTube tutorials filmed in Ohio. Erica considers it her professional responsibility to document these methods before the institutional memory is gone: not out of nostalgia, but because they represent genuinely effective, low-resource solutions to real-world tire failure scenarios that any driver or mechanic on any continent might one day face.

Every article, technique breakdown, and regional report published on ericaalexander has been verified through direct observation, hands-on testing, or expert consultation. Nothing is published from behind a desk. That is the standard she set for herself in Gaziantep in 2014, and it has not changed.

Our Foundation

Our Mission: Education, Nothing More

ericaalexander exists for one reason: to make Turkey's rich, hands-on tire repair knowledge accessible to anyone who wants to understand it — whether you're a professional mechanic, an enthusiast, or simply curious about how things work at the roadside.

We do not sell products. We do not offer repair services. We do not recommend specific brands for commercial gain. This is a purely informational platform — a carefully documented record of techniques, terminology, and trade knowledge gathered from the workshops and highways of Turkey.

Our goal is to document this knowledge faithfully, communicate it clearly, and share it freely — preserving insights that might otherwise stay confined to a single garage in Konya or a seaside shop in Bodrum.

Editorial Standards

How Every Article Is Built

Field Observation

Every technique described on this site is grounded in direct observation inside working tire repair shops across Turkey — from Istanbul's busy backstreet garages to coastal workshops in İzmir and the high-altitude repair stations of Central Anatolia.

Expert Interviews with Turkish Master Mechanics

All core articles draw on structured conversations with experienced Turkish tire technicians — many with 20+ years at the bench. Their practical knowledge, regional terminology, and trade insights form the backbone of every educational piece published here.

Accuracy Review

Before publication, each article goes through a multi-step review: cross-referencing with industry documentation, verification of tool names and specifications, and a final read-through for technical consistency. Corrections are applied promptly and noted transparently.

Transparent Sourcing

Where external references, standards bodies, or published data are cited, sources are named clearly within the article. We do not accept sponsored content, affiliate arrangements, or paid placements — editorial decisions remain fully independent.

Editorially Independent

No advertising. No sponsorships. No affiliate links. Our editorial process is governed solely by accuracy and educational value.
